Meet the Secretariat

Luca La Monaca

Secretary-General

Luca La Monaca (he/him) is a third year student from Hawthorne, New Jersey at the University of Miami. He’s majoring in Economics and Political Science with a minor in Italian. In the last 305 MUN, he was the Chair for the IFFY Infrastructure Crisis Committee. Luca also served as a co-chair for the Formula 1 crisis committee at the University of Miami’s high school conference, the Miami International Conference for the Simulation of the United Nations (MICSUN). Luca is a member of the University of Miami Model United Nations Travel Team and frequently competes on the collegiate circuit.

Outside of MUN, Luca is a member of the University’s healthcare consulting club and is on a few intramural soccer teams! He’s a Massive sports fan and probably watches every sport in the world. You can usually always find him with food in his hand.

Emma Best

Director-General

Emma Best (She/Her) is a rising second-year from Ithaca, New York double-majoring in International Studies and Political Science at the University of Miami. She is also minoring in Business Law on the Pre-Law Track. She has been a part of MUN for two years, and has competed as well as chaired notable committees including “When Walls Don’t Work: The Fall of Constantinople, 1453” at MICSUN XII, and “From Russia, With Love: Russian Presidential Cabinet, 2050” at 305MUN II.

When not engaged in MUN activities, Emma spends her time interning at law firms based in Buffalo, New York, participating in various organizations around campus, and both watching and placing bets (sometimes poorly) on every sport imaginable. In her free time, she loves discovering hidden-gem coffee shops for studying, booking last-minute flights to random places, and finding spots to hike or take thought-daughter walks.

Giancarlo Lopez

Under-Secretary-General of General Assemblies and Specialized Committees

Giancarlo Lopez (he/Him) is a second-year at the University of Miami, double-majoring in Political Science and History on the Pre-Law Track. He was born and raised in Miami and commutes to school. He has been a part of MUN for 4 years, and aside from frequently competing in the circuit, his previous experience includes running several committees, including MICSUN XII’s “Freedom & Justice for All: The Supreme Court of the United States” and MDMUN 2025’s “Human Rights Council: The Right to Education”.

Outside of MUN, Giancarlo spends his time competing for the University of Miami’s Mock Trial Team as both attorney and witness, interning at law firms and congressional offices around Miami, and rotting in his bed watching TV. In his free time, Giancarlo enjoys playing video games, playing pick up basketball with his friends, and writing poetry and short stories.

Yash Kansal

Under-Secretary-General of Crisis Committees

Yash Kansal (he/him) is a third-year at the University of Miami,majoring in Quantitative Economics and minoring in Finance, on the Pre-Law Track. He is originally from Mumbai, India and now lives in California. He has been a part of MUN for 2 years, and his previous experience includes running several committees, including 305MUN II’s “Sustainable Skies, Unstable Ground: IATA”, and MICSUN XII’s “Temple of Speed: F1 Monza, 2021”.

 Outside of MUN, Yash spends his time running his own clothing brand and working alongside financial and banking sectors in the entertainment and corporate luxury world. In his free time, Yash spends most of his time at the Biltmore Golf Course, running around Miami, and slumped up in bed watching every movie known to man.

Julia Zhu (she/her) is a third-year at the University of Miami, double majoring in Finance and Marketing with minors in Psychology and Japanese. Originally from Shenyang, China, she now lives in Long Island, New York. This is her second year in MUN, and aside from competing in the circuit, her previous experiences includes running 305MUN II’s “Washing Up: World Health Organization, 2024,”  and MICSUN XII’s “Temple of Speed: The 2021 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.”

Outside of MUN, Julia spends her time as the Marketing Director of the Miami Hurricanes’ Newspaper (on the business side) making ad-campaigns and training sales representatives. In her free time, Julia enjoys going to pilates with her friends, exploring local restaurants, and finding the best matcha in Miami.

Julia Zhu

Under-Secretary-General of Logistics

Diego Balda (he/him) is a third-year from Caracas, Venezuela studying Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami while pursuing Pre-Medical Track. With nine years of Model United Nations experience, Diego is the current Head Delegate of the Miami Model UN Team, has both competed extensively and directed notable committees including “When Walls Don’t Work: The Fall of Constantinople, 1453” at MICSUN XII and “From Russia, With Love: Russian Presidential Cabinet, 2050” at 305MUN II.

When not engaged in MUN activities, Diego works as a Research Assistant in UM's Miller School of Medicine, and maintains a self-proclaimed excessive restaurant-hopping. habit. His leisure pursuits include discovering local dining spots, taking impromptu beach trips, and enthusiastically recommending White Lotus (You Want to Live in Taiwan?! Version).

Sophia Ives

Under-Secretary-General of Finance

Sophia Ives (she/her) is a sophomore at the University of Miami, pursuing a dual degree in International Studies and Quantitative Economics on the pre-law track. She is from Orlando, Florida, and has been a part of Model United Nations (MUN) for two years. Her previous experience includes staffing MICSUN's “Temple of Speed: The 2021 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix” and MDMUN’s 2025 “Human Rights Council.” 

Outside of MUN, Sophia is an intern at the Hanley Democracy Center on campus, as well as a member of the Debate Team and many other pre-law organizations. In her free time, Sophia likes working out, trying new coffee shops with friends, and watching Severance.

Stella York

Philanthropy

Stella York (she/her) from Memphis, Tennessee, is a second-year student at the University of Miami studying elementary education and data analytics and intelligence for social impact. This is her second year in MUN with previous experience crisis staffing 305MUNII's "From Russia, with Love" and MICSUN XII's ADHOC of the Secretary General, along with competing frequently in the circuit. She is thrilled to serve as USG of Philanthropy for 305MUN III!

Outside of MUN, Stella is a research assistant in the School of Education, works as a peer research consultant for UM libraries, and can be found at line dancing club in the evening! In her free time, she enjoys outings to Key Biscayne, exploring Miami with her friends, and a good Starbucks grilled cheese.

Aakash Singh

Under-Secretary-General of Registration & Delegate Affairs

Aakash Singh (he/him) is a third-year at the University of Miami, double-majoring in Psychology and Philosophy. He has been a part of MUN for two years, and has previous experience running several committees, including 305MUN II’s “Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners, 2024", and MICSUN XII's “Through the Wire: The Rise of Roc-A-Fella Records, 1996”.

Outside of MUN, Aakash spends his time as an Office Assistant in UM’s Biomedical Engineering department, and as a Research Assistant for the Cognition and Intelligence Lab in UM's Psychology department. In his free time, Aakash enjoys listening to music, playing video games, and hanging out with his friends.
